At the turn of the century, when Alessandro Longo began editing his ll-volume collection of the keyboard sonatas of Domenieo Scarlatti, the legacy of the brilliant composer was still overshadowed by that of his contemporary, Johann Sebastian Bach. Today, Scarlatti (1685-1757) is recognized by most scholars and musicians as "the founder of modern keyboard execution" (Grove's Dictionary). His inventive style--most notable in these "essercizi" or sonatas--exercised a powerful influence over later masters such as Mendelssohn and Liszt. This sturdy volume presents 40 of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas in a handsome, affordable edition compiled directly from Longo's monumental ll-volume set. Written in the last fifteen years of his life while Scarlatti enjoyed the generous patronage of Queen Maria Barbara of Spain, the sonatas are the crowning achievements of an outstanding Baroque composer. Exciting experimental effects--consecutive fifths and octaves, crossing hands, internal repetitions, and extended chords
Offered here for the first time in a single collection are the Prelude in C-sharp Minor; 3 Etudes-Tableaux from Op. 33 and 39; 7 Preludes from Opp. 23 and 32; 3 Moments Musicaux from Op. 16; the "Barcarolle" and "Humoreske" from Morceaux de salon, Op. 9; "Polichinelle" from Op. 3.
Perhaps the most majestic achievement in the last phase of Haydn's musical career, The Creation is a choral masterwork of seamless perfection. It is also among the most popular oratorios of all time, celebrating the glories of nature, man's innocent joy, and his gratitude to God for creating simple things for his pleasure and benefit. Extolling the wonders described in the Book of Genesis, the work combines the traditions of a Handel oratorio and the Viennese mass with Haydn's own symphonic style. Reproduced from an authoritative early edition, this score appears with bar- numbered movements and includes a text underlay in both German and English. Ideal for study in the classroom, at home, or in the concert hall, this affordable, high-quality, conveniently sized volume will be the edition of choice for music students and music lovers alike.
The complete van Gogh Vincent van Gogh's story is one of the most ironic in art history. He lived an unhappy and difficult life during which his work received almost no appreciation—finally killing himself by a bullet to the chest, so great was his despair—and is now widely considered one of the most important painters of all time, his works fetching record prices of tens of millions of dollars at auction. This comprehensive study of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) represents a rarity in art history: a detailed monograph on his life and art combined with a complete catalogue of his 871 paintings. This volume also reproduces most of van Gogh's paintings in color for the first time.

The Blaue Reiter ("Blue Rider") group of artists was formed in Munich in 1911 on the initiative of two outstanding artists: Wassily Kandinsky, the fundamental pioneer of purely abstract painting, and Franz Marc, the creator of mysterious, abstract animal pictures. Together, the Russian, the German and many others in their circle strove towards an apotheosis of the spiritual in art. The outbreak of the First World War appeared to put a brutal end to what was at the time the most important avant-garde movement in Germany, but its influence continued unabated and inspired whole generations of international artists to create similar utopias.
An aggressively bright-yellow taxicab catches the attention of a harassed city dweller....A vivid red truck passes at first glance for a child's toy....A window display of theatrical complexity suggests a microcosm of the metropolis itself....These are the targets of Robert Walker's extraordinary photography—the contemporary, universal megalopolis, in all its crazy color, dissonance, and chaos. Robert Walker's world is one in which mundane activities take on the character of inexplicable urban rites and quasi-mythic struggles. Using the phone, crossing the street, holding one's own on the busy sidewalk: such insignificant actions demand competitiveness and creativity. The photographer records these instants with an eye for the odd and the absurd, but not without empathy for the individual caught up in the city's complex machinery. Witty blurring of the real and the unreal—the sign, the illusion, the simulacrum, ultimately the dream—forces us to question our understanding of the city. Th

Edward Hopper (1882-1967) is considered the first significantAmerican painter in 20th-century art. After decades of patientwork, Hopper enjoyed a success and popularity that since the 1950shas continually grown. In canvas after canvas he painted theloneliness of big-city people. Many of Hopper's pictures representviews of streets and roads, rooftops, and abandoned houses, depicted in a brilliant light that strangely belies the melancholymood of the scenes. Hopper's paintings are marked by strikingjuxtapositions of colour, and by the clear contours with which thefigures are demarcated from their surroundings. His extremelyprecise focus on the theme of modern men and women in the naturaland man-made environment sometimes lends his pictures a mood ofeerie disquiet. On the other hand, Hopper's renderings of rockylandscapes in warm brown hues, or his depictions of the seacoast, exude an unusual tranquillity that reveals another, more optimisticside of his character.

A master of the art song, Brahms extended his exceptional artistry to the delightful solo vocal quartets contained in this volume. Included are the Liebeslieder, Op. 5"2, 18 songs for vocal quartet (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) and piano four hands; Neue Liebeslieder, Op. 65, 14 songs and a dosing piece for the same ensemble; and Zigeunerlieder, Op. 103, 11 songs for vocal quartet and piano (one player). Of the two sets of Liebeslieder, Grove's Dictionary remarks: "The former shows Brahms in his most genial Viennese vein . . . and some of the quieter pieces are unexpectedly touching. The second set is rather more sombre in colouring and ends with a remark- ably beautiful finale, to words by Goethe, in which the dance rhythm seems to fade away in the distance." The Zigeunerlieder elicit this comment: "... the general atmosphere of the music is essentially Brahmsian... and most delightful in quality."
Renowned for such masterworks as the opera The Bartered Bride and Ma Vlast (My Fatherland), a cycle of symphonic poems, Czech composer Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) was also a composer of important chamber music. The two quartets in this volumeboth autobiographical in nature--are among his finest works in the genre. The String Quartet No. 1 in E Minor, a musical recollection of the composer's life, paints a picture of yearning ambition, a happy social life, and the delights of love; but the end brings hints of future difficulties that darken the quarter's sunny mood. The String Quartet No. 2 in D Minor, written in 1882 after deafness had overtaken Smetana, is less sanguine in tone. Its somber themes, suggesting the difficuhies of the composer's life with the handicap of hearing loss, exert a powerful, emotional pull on the listener. Remarkable for their quasi-programmatic realism in recalling Smetana's life, both works are frequently heard and performed today. Reproduced here from authoritative earl
French composer Ernest Chausson (1855-1899) came late to music and his promising career was cut tragically short by a fatal accident; nevertheless, his musical legacy embraces compositions in every genre, including the critically acclaimed Concerto in D for Piano, Violin and String Quartet. This masterful work exhibits the significant influence of Cesar Franck, with whom Chausson studied, particularly in its cyclical form, numerous modula-tions, and deeply expressive lyricism. Chausson hoped to foster a rediscovery of classic forms, especially in chamber music. Grove's Dictionary of Music and Musicians notes that "He wanted to prove, above all.., that a sonata or a quartet may contain as much music as a whole opera." This brilliant work attests to the success of his efforts. Reproduced here from an authoritative source, this delightful work is certain to enchant a broad range of musicians and music lovers.
