辛亥革命研究专家、武汉大学教授冯天瑜与武汉社科院张笃勤研究员联手新撰的《辛亥首义史》收录400余幅历史图片，用详细的一手史料再现了百年前首义风云，是迄今我国记录辛亥首义史事最为翔实的著作。在这部60多万文字、700余幅历史图片的巨著里，冯天瑜充分运用其考据功夫，对武昌首义前后一系列似乎已有定论的微观问题，重新考证，提出有别于习惯说法的新结论：湖北第一个革命团体是吴禄贞主持的“花园山聚会”，“科学补习所”只是承其绪的组织；《大江报》时评《大乱者，救中国之妙药也》作者并非詹大悲，而为黄季刚；汉口宝善里机关失事为10月9日，并非10月8日；武昌首义第一枪由程正瀛打响，并非孙中山所称的熊秉坤等等。
