PreS. There can never be enough truck books for some preschoolers, and those who feel that way are sure to love this one--for the sound and rhythm of the words as well as clear, brightly colored pictures of machines in action. As a boy and his mom watch the activity at a building site, the child hears the pounding of the huge machines. Digger goes "Grrr-clank! Grr-clank! Grrr-clank-clank!"; "Flatbed backs and grunts, then backs and grunts some more"; Cement Mixer rumbles and grumbles. The workmen are Digger's helpers, and the pictures show them climbing and clanging, welding and hammering. When all the work is done, there is a new community center for everyone. After a read-aloud, toddlers will want to play out the construction action again and again.

Each spread features a distinctive collage of cut-and-torn papers, which vary in texture and hue. Silhouetted forms provide dramatic focal points in the compositions. Each spread includes a couple of lines of text, supplemented with more information in smaller type and inset maps and diagrams that help the reader visualize just how high, deep, or wet the subject is in comparison with others of its kind. Highly effective visual education for the classroom or for young browsers intrigued by superlatives. Carolyn Phelan --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
Kindergarten-Grade 3-A well-told story with distinctive characters. In 1850, Ned, an eight-year-old Cape Cod boy, takes a job as a cook on a fishing schooner in order to support his mother and his younger siblings. While Ned finds the life difficult, he makes friends with the crew and becomes especially fond of an older sailor who is in charge of salting the cod. Ezra explains that the vessel will return home when the salt runs out. Ned wastes the preservative whenever possible, hoping to return to port in time for his birthday. Therefore, he is surprised when Ezra announces that the salt, which Ned knows was not in short supply, is gone. Readers will sympathize with the child and share his joy when he is able to celebrate his special day with his family. There is also humor, particularly when the crew plays a trick on him and everyone enjoys the joke. The illustrations, in soft pastel watercolors, are evocative of the sunlit journey. This witty folktale about a king with a secret is retold by an acclaimed storyteller. King Mark has a secret: he has horse's ears. No one knows about it except his barber, who could lose his head if he tells. But knowing the secret makes the barber ill, so his doctor advises him to tell his secret to the ground. The secret then grows into reeds, the reeds are made into pipes - and what happens next will surprise and amuse young readers. The story of King Mark and his ears is told with lively humor by professional storyteller Eric Maddern, and Paul Hess's delightfully droll artwork adds to the fun.
For small children worrying about the existence of childhood's "special" friends--especially Tooth Fairy but also Santa Claus and Easter Bunny--here's a story to allay any and all misgivings. Little Hippo is proving to be a serious "doubting Thomas," and Tooth Fairy's not at all pleased! Sure, "the tooth-for-coin exchange thing" is a little late tonight, but is she to blame for the rain that's upsetting her delivery schedule? Can she help it if wet wings don't work as well as dry ones? Fortunately for Little Hippo, seeing is believing, and, in no time at all, his faith in Tooth Fairy and magic is fully restored. This engaging adventure, cleverly illustrated to convey and complement the tongue-in-cheek tone of the story, will delight even the most skeptical young readers.
