Spanning such a diverse geographical and cultural expanse as Asia, the first impression of this body of work is its utter diversity. While there may be country- or state wide commonalities, across nations the micro nuances of environment, climate, culture, economics, society and history can obviously be felt and make it difficult to generalize over architectural mannerisms and uncover any emerging trends. The architectural urgency that comes with youth is evident in the aspiring philosophies that lavish these pages. What binds them together whether it's a private home, a public institution, a piece of furniture, or city wide planning - is a richness of expression and a depth of narrative that results in meaningful spaces and objects that thrill, bemuse, and enlighten. Each project tells a story in terms of its choice of materials or its play with form. It is serious work that lacks frivolity yet leaves its audience indulged. There are of course stark contrasts, largely owing to the widely divergent char

The relation between the earth - as a natural element and the planet on which we live - and architecture is illustrated in this volume where the respect for nature's simplicity inspired each of the cases here presented. With a renewed desire to make use of the materials the earth can offer and a strong sense of identification with the habitat that surrounds them, these architects and interior designers offer solutions - some more technical, others artisanal - that ensure that their projects are as well-integrated into their surroundings as possible, with designs that seem to retro-nourish themselves from the planet: they adapt to it and resolve, with as little environmental impact as possible, the challenges in topography, climate, energy and culture planted befu'e rhem. This way, architecture is responding with efficient and conclusive proposals that, similar to the concepts of sustainable architecture, symbolize a meditative and logical contemplation of origins by displaying more confidence in materials tha

New trends, new designs, new decorative li-nes... A lot of things have evolved and adapted to our changing lifestyles. Homes, and more specifically, their interior design, have evolved as well. That's what this book is about, combining beauty with practicality, and more important-ly, how to achieve these two objectives in small spaces, which are increasingly more common wherever housing is concerned. The idea is to find practical solutions for the space available and see to it that today's designs and latest trends are reflected in it. "Architecture should be carnal, substantial, both spiritually and speculatively but with noother choice than to adapt to the space." This quote by the French-Swiss architect Le Corbu, sier, widely considered the most important in modern architecture, sums up best what you'll find in the following pages.

Approximately 70 vivid and detailed case histories of major projects in Europe, where green roofs began, and contemporary examples throughout North America, copiously and beautifully illus-trated with almost 400 images, make this book an invaluable guide to the state of the art. Landscape architect Steven L. Cantor empha-sizes design lessons drawn from experts who have built and maintained a wide variety of

Tsutomu Kurokawa's designs have a sense of humour and warmth, even those with the hardest industrial surfaces; a poetic, delicate sensitivity flowing through. He never forgot the role of the user, the conforming of their viewpoint and the creator's dream a test he relished - taking issue with the complacency of designers who simply follow set 'rules' without questioning them. When making space designs, Kurokawa said, I propose a space to the client based on the needs the client has, but which he has not yet imagined. I believe this is true design. Before his death in 2005, he created what he called, 'space which is free, comfortable and full of potential', merging different elements into one place or piece of furniture, proposing and testing design ideas every day. Tsumotu Kurokawa possessed a unique vitality, coming as close as one can to what we might call the truth of design. Text in English and Japanese.
