Thiook was written as an introductory text for a one semester course and, as such, it is far from a prehensive reference work. Its lack of pleteness is now more apparent than ever since, like most branches of mathematics, knot theory has expanded enormously during the last fifteen years. The book could certainly be rewritten by including more material and also by introducing topics in a more elegant and up-to-date style. Acplishing these objectives would be extremely worthwhile. However, a significant revision of the original work along these lines, as opposed to writing a new book, would probably be a mistake. As inspired by its senior author, the late Ralph H. Fox, thiook achieves qualities of effectiveness, brevity, elementary character, and unity. These characteristics would be jeopardized, if not lost, in a major revision. As a result, the book ieing republished unchanged, except for minor corrections. The most important of these occurs in Chapter III, where the old sections 2 and 3 have been interchange

This second edition of "Categories Work" adds two new chapters on topics of active interest. One is on symmetric monoidal categories and braided monoidal categories and the coherence theorems for them--items of interest in their own right and also in view of their use in string theory in quantum field theory. The second new chapter describes 2-categories and the higher-dimensional categories that have recently e into prominence. In addition, the bibliography haeen expanded to cover some of the many other recent advances concerning categories.
This is the third version of a book on differential manifolds. The first version appeared in 1962, and was written at the very beginning of a period of great expansion of the subject. At the time, I found no satisfactory book for the foundations of the subject, for multiple reasons. I expanded the book in 1971, and I expand it still further today. Specifically, I have added three chapters on Riemannian and pseudo Riemannian geometry, that is, covariant derivatives, curvature, and some applications up to the Hopf-Rinow and Hadamard-Cartan theorems, as well as some calculus of variations and applications to volume forms. I have rewritten the sections on sprays, and I have given more examples of the use of Stokes' theorem. I have also given many more references to the literature, all of this to broaden the perspective of the book, which I hope can be used among things for a general course leading into many directions. The present book still meets the old needs, but fulfills new ones.

My goals in thiook on Riemannian geometry are essentially the same as those which guided me in my Eigenvalues in Riemannian Geometry [69], to introduce the subject, to coherently present a number of itasic techniques and results with a mind to future work, and to present some of the results that are attractive in their own right. Thiook differs from Eigenvalues in that it starts at a more basic level,and therefore, it must present a broader view of the ideas from which all the various directions emerge. At the same time, other treatments of Riemannian geometry are available at varying levels and interests,so I need not introduce everything. I have, therefore, attempted a viable introduction to Riemannian geometry for a very broad group of students, with emphases and developments in areas not covered by other books.
