Literature about Durer fills library shelves. Does this meaneverything has already been said about the artist? Far from it,according to the scholars at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum andtheir international partners in the Early Durer Project. This bookdeals with the core phenomena of Durers early work, ranging fromthe artists biography and surroundings to the question of Durersrole as the archetype of the modern artist. New sociologicalapproaches allow us to interpret Durers ideal neighbourhood as asource of inspiration for the artists work, resituating Durer inthe artistic context of his time, at an exciting crossroad betweenthe imitation of traditional painting and the self-consciousrenewal of his profession. Photographs of Durers early work, manyof which are new and published here for the first time, completethe publication, which will establish a new basis for a modernunderstanding of Germanys most famous artist.

The moral of this book is that behind every great engineeringsuccess is a trail of often ignored (but frequently spectacular)engineering failures. Petroski covers many of the best knownexamples of well-intentioned but ultimately failed design in action-- the galloping Tacoma Narrows Bridge (which you've probably seentossing cars willy-nilly in the famous black-and-white footage),the collapse of the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel walkways -- andmany lesser known but equally informative examples. The line ofreasoning Petroski develops in this book were later formalized intohis quasi-Darwinian model of technological evolution in TheEvolution of Useful Things , but this book is arguably the moreilluminating -- and defintely the more enjoyable -- of these twotitles. Highly recommended.
Italian Frescoes: The Baroque Era, 1600-1800 presents theItalian Baroque period in its full grandeur, from the arrival inRome of the style of Annibale Carracci and his pupils through theend of the eighteenth century, when after the long predominance ofBaroque forms and expressions the pendulum swung back, bringing abrief revival of High Renaissance style. Supplementing Dr. SteffiRoettgen's text are 420 full-color images and 71 black-and-whiteillustrations and building plans. Of the twenty-two fresco cyclesfeatured, two-thirds are from the secular sphere and the rest fromsacred places, contradicting the common notion that Baroquemonumental painting is found mainly in cathedrals and other sitesof worship. The volume opens with an illustrated introductionoutlining the principles of Baroque wall and ceiling painting. Anessay introduces each fresco cycle and is followed by a portfolioof full- and double-page color plates, many of them newlyphotographed.
