The study of households and everyday life is increasinglyrecognized as fundamental in social archeological analysis. Thisvolume is the first to address the household as a process and as aconceptual and analytical means through which we can interpretsocial organization from the bottom up. Using detailed case studiesfrom Neolithic Greece, Stella Souvatzi examines how the householdis defined socially, culturally, and historically; she discusseshousehold and community, variability, production and reproduction, individual and collective agency, identity, change, complexity, andintegration. Her study is enriched by an in-depth discussion of theframework for the household in the social sciences and thesynthesis of many anthropological, historical, and sociologicalexamples. It reverses the view of the household as passive, ahistorical, and stable, showing it instead to be active, dynamic, and continually shifting.
This is the story of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, through its extraordinary fifty years at the heart of the civilrights movement and the struggle for justice in America. Mary Frances Berry, the commission’s chairperson for more than adecade, author of My Face Is Black Is True (“An essential chapterin American history from a distinguished historian”—Nell Painter),tells of the commission’s founding in 1957 by President Eisenhower,in response to burgeoning civil rights protests; how it wasdesigned to be an independent bipartisan Federal agency—made up ofsix members, with no more than three from one political party, freeof interference from Congress and presidents—beholden to nogovernment body, with full subpoena power, and free to decide whatit would investigate and report on. Berry writes that the commission, rather than producing reportsthat would gather dust on the shelves, began to hold hearings evenas it was under attack from Southern segregationists. Sh

The Rhineland region includes the core regional economy ofwestern Europe, encompassing Belgium, Luxemburg and parts of theNetherlands, France, Switzerland and Germany. Throughout historythere have been tensions between this region's roles as a frontierand as western Europe's economic core. Michael Loriaux argues thatthe European Union arose from efforts to deconstruct this frontier. He traces Rhineland geopolitics back to its first emergence, restoring frontier deconstruction to the forefront of discussionabout the EU. He recounts how place names were manipulated tolegitimate political power and shows how this manipulationgenerated the geopolitics that the EU now tries to undo. Loriauxalso argues that the importance of this issue has significantlyaffected the nature of the EU's development and helps condition afestering legitimation crisis.
The emergence of observing systems such as acoustically-trackedfloats in the deep ocean, and surface drifters navigating bysatellite has seen renewed interest in Lagrangian fluid dynamics.Starting from the foundations of elementary kinematics and assumingsome familiarity of Eulerian fluid dynamics, this book reviews theclassical and new exact solutions of the Lagrangian framework, andthen addresses the general solvability of the resulting generalequations of motion. A unified account of turbulent diffusion anddispersion is offered, with applications among others to planktonpatchiness in the ocean. Written at graduate level, the bookprovides the first detailed and comprehensive analyticaldevelopment of the Lagrangian formulation of fluid dynamics, ofinterest not only to applied mathematicians but alsooceanographers, meteorologists, mechanical engineers, astrophysicists and indeed all investigators of the dynamics offluids.
Babies are not born talking, they learn language, startingimmediately from birth. How does this process take place? When dochildren master the skills needed for using language successfully? What stages do they go through as they learn to understand andtalk? Do the languages they learn affect the way they think? Thisnew edition of Eve Clark's highly successful textbook focuses onchildren's acquisition of a first language, the stages ofdevelopment they go through, and how they use language as theylearn. It reports on recent findings in each area covered, includesa completely new chapter on the acquisition of two languages andshows how speech to children differs by social class. Skilfullyintegrating actual data with coverage of current theories anddebates, it is an essential guide to studying language acquisitionfor those working in linguistics, developmental psychology andcognitive science.
The Inquisitive Problem Solver is a collection of mathematicalminiatures composed to stimulate and entertain. On a deeper level, these little puzzles, accessible to a general audience, provide asetting rich in mathematical themes. One of the larger purposes ofthe book is to show how everyday situations can lead an inquisitiveproblem solver to profound and far-reaching mathematicalprinciples. Discussions accompanying the problems reinforceimportant techniques in discrete mathematics, and the solutions -which require verbal arguments - show that proofs and carefulreasoning are at the core of doing mathematics. In addition, anyonereading this book will learn that asking good questions is just asimportant to the progress of mathematics as answering questions. The book contains more than a dozen open problems for furtherresearch by amateurs or professionals. This treasury of problemswill serve as a resource for anyone seeking to improve theirproblem-solving knowledge and know-how. · Puzzles accessible

In contrast to those who see the 1950s as essentially aconservative period, and who view the 1960s as a time of rapidmoral change, The Permissive Society points to the emergence of aliberalizing impulse during the Truman and Eisenhower years. Thebook shows how, during the 1950s, a traditionalist moral frameworkwas beginning to give way to a less authoritarian approach to moralissues as demonstrated by a more relaxed style of child-rearing,the rising status of women both inside and outside the home, theincreasing reluctance of Americans to regard alcoholism as a sin, loosening sexual attitudes, the increasing influence of modernpsychology, and, correspondingly, the declining influence ofreligion in the personal lives of most Americans.

When one defines order as a sorting of priorities, it becomes beautifully clear as to what Foucault is doing here. With virtuoso showmanship, he weaves an intensely complex history of thought. He dips into literature, art, economics and even biology in The Order of Things, possibly one of the most significant, yet most overlooked, works of the twentieth century. Eclipsed by his later work on power and discourse, nonetheless it was The Order of Things that established Foucault's reputation as an intellectual giant. Pirouetting around the outer edge of language, Foucault unsettles the surface of literary writing. In describing the limitations of our usual taxonomies, he opens the door onto a whole new system of thought, one ripe with what he calls exotic charm. Intellectual pyrotechnics from the master of critical thinking, this book is crucial reading for those who wish to gain insight into that odd beast called Postmodernism, and a must for any fan of Foucault.
In this classic text, David Bohm explores Albert Einstein's celebrated theory of relativity through inspiring and visionary lectures. First published in 1905, Einstein's ideas forever transformed the way we think about time and space. Yet for Bohm the implications of the theory were far more revolutionary both in scope and impact even than this. Stepping back from dense theoretical and scientific detail in this eye-opening work, Bohm describes how the notion of relativity strikes at the heart of our very conception of the universe, whether we are physicists, philosophers or none of the above.
Greene, one of the world's leading string theorists, peels awaythe layers of mystery to reveal a universe of 11 dimensions wherethe fabric of space tears and repairs itself, in this "New YorkTimes" bestseller that features a new Preface and Epilogue.

How do we see in three dimensions? How do weremember names and faces? How is it, indeed, that we ponder thenature of our own consciousness? Why do we fall in love? In thisbold, extraordinary book, Pinker synthesizes the best of cognitivescience and evolutionary biology to explain what the mind is, howit has evolved, and, ultimately, how it works. This editionincludes a new afterword that explores the impact of the book andits relevance today.
People decide about political parties by taking into accountthe preferences, values, expectations, and perceptions of theirfamily, friends, colleagues, and neighbours. As most people livewith others, members of their households influence each other'spolitical decisions. How and what they think about politics andwhat they do are the outcomes of social processes. Applying variedstatistical models to data from extensive German and Britishhousehold surveys, this book shows that wives and husbandsinfluence each other; young adults influence their parents, especially their mothers. Wives and mothers sit at the centre ofhouseholds: their partisanship influences the partisanship ofeveryone else, and the others affect them. Politics in householdsinteracts with competition among the political parties to sustainbounded partisanship. People ignore one of the major parties andvary their preference of its major rival over time. Electioncampaigns reinforce these choices.

The establishment in British India produced an impressive numberof scholars and scholarly amateurs who pursued historical and otherstudies and wrote books and articles of distinction. Mr Palmer hasproduced a work in this tradition. His subject is the outbreak ofthe Mutiny (as the Raj considered it) among the native regiments(as the Raj called them) at Meerut on the evening of Sunday 10 May1857. Was the outbreak planned in advance or did it arise throughchance circumstances on that fateful evening? How badly was thesituation handled?
