As the title of David Bailey's earlier monograph "Bailey'sDemocracy" suggests, the legendary British photographer likes tobring the same quality of attention to each of his subjects, irrespective of their fame or reputation: "I treat the boy down atthe post office like the president of Russia, and the president ofRussia like the boy down at the post office." "David Bailey's Eye"presents a choice selection of Bailey's photographs--mostly inblack-and-white, some in color--spanning the years between 1962 and2008, the breadth of Bailey's career. His egalitarian stance, oftenindicated by a conspicuous absence of props and a minimal approachto lighting, enables the photographer to tease from his subjectstraits which more formal portraits would lack: the warm benevolenceof I.M. Pei for example, the exuberance of John Galliano or thebrooding look of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Bailey's eye surveys thegamut of humankind, from celebrities to people far from celebrityorbits, examining each of his subjects for the moment

Strokes of genius: the magic of Monet... Claude Monet (1840–1926) was both the most typical and the most individual painter associated with the Impressionist movement. His long life and extraordinary work were dedicated to a pictorial exploration of the sensations which reality, and in particular landscape, offer the human eye. Monet’s poplars, grain stacks, Rouen Cathedral, and waterlily paintings — among the most beloved works of the Impressionist period — were created long before the currents of the contemporary avant-garde and had an inestimable influence on the development of modern art. This book traces the life’s work of one of art history’s most beloved painters.
Japanese woodblock prints of the Edo period (16151868) were the products of a highly commercialised and competitive publishing industry. Their content was inspired by the vibrant popular culture that flourished in Edo (Tokyo). At any given time scores of publishers competed for the services of the leading artists of the day. Publishers and artists displayed tremendous ingenuity in finding ways to sustain demand for prints and to to circumvent the restrictions placed upon them by government censorship. Japanese woodblock prints have long been appreciated in the West for their graphic qualities but their content has not always been fully understood. In recent years, publications by scholars in Japan, Europe and the United States have made possible a more subtle appreciation of the imagery encountered in them. This book draws upon this recent scholarship to explain how those who first purchased these prints would have read them. Through stunning new photography of both well-known and rarely published work

In May 1791, Mozart's friend Emanuel Schikaneder commissioned The Magic Flute. In keeping with the popular level of his theater, Schikaneder himself supplied Mozart with the libretto about the rescue of a good fairy's daughter from a wicked magician by a hero armed with a magic flute. After a good deal of the music was written, composer and librettist, both Freemasons, grafting Masonic ideals onto the plot, transformed a simple fairy tale into a moralistic allegory, and a Singspiel into one of the world's greatest operas. This handsome, moderately priced volume, reprinted directly from an authoritative edition, will enable musicians, music students and opera lovers to gain a fuller appreciation of Mozart's mastery of operatic language, orchestral color and dramatic expression.
