《邮筒里的老天津》一书分为租界掠影、玉带流光、古城遗韵和市井风情等四个专题，所载明信片年代跨度在19世纪末至20世纪40年代初（印制发行），且大多为邮递实寄片，明信片贴用或中国或及外国“客邮”邮票的同时，亦是盖销有涉及“天津”的收寄地、中转地、寄达地及火车班次、海运班期等戳记，对于研究天津社会发展史、邮政史乃至中国近代史均具有重要意义。 本书中的这些明信片早期由西方人拍摄和制作，后期渐渐转向中国的邮政部门。前期和后期的视角与立场，明显不同。前期西方人对天津本土景物充满猎奇；后期本地人对租界的风光也抱以同样的好奇。老天津出版的明信片数量不算少，一些本地具有标志性的景物，如戈登堂、万国桥、金华桥、鼓楼、总督衙门等，都是明信片经常的取材对象。明信片提供的重要的信息是时间和地点(邮政日戳)。
