Published from 1883 to 1957, The Etude Music Magazine read like a diary of the emerging American musical community. During this period, it featured a series of "Master-Lessons" by noted piano virtuosi. Originally intended to provide world-class teaching to a public that otherwise could not afford such lessons, the series became an invaluable record of professional performance practice, offering a rare and unique glimpse of piano teaching in the first decades of the century. Among the chapters in this collection are master-lessons on Paderewski's Minuet in G, Chopin's Military Polonaise, Grieg's Norwegian Bridal Procession, Mendelssohn's Scherzo, and Beethoven's Pathdtique Sonata. Authors include such piano masters as Wilhelm Bachaus, Percy Grainger, Edwin Hughes, and Mark Hambourg. This unique collection, carefully compiled in a format that preserves its original layout and style, is indispensable to piano teachers and students, and of the greatest interest to the growing number of piano literatur
Composed for celebrations from Christmas to Epiphany and first produced in Leipzig in 1734 35, Bach's Christmas Oratorio unfolds movingly in a set of six cantatas unified by a single narrative recounting the birth of Christ. Traditional passages from the Gospels of Luke and Matthew are presented in recitative, interspersed with arias and choruses that provide powerful emotional and contemplative responses to the story. Among the most famous segments of the Christmas Oratorio are the great opening ehorns, "Jauehzet, frohlocket!," the beautiful pastoral Sinfonia, the bass aria "Grosser Herr, und starker Konig," the alto aria "Schlafe, mein Liebster" and the dosing chorus, "Nun seid ihr wohl geroehen." This masterpiece of sacred music, for centuries a favorite of concert audiences and church congregations throughout the Christmas season, has been reprodueed directly from the authoritative Bach Gesellschaft edition published by Breitkopf & HS.rtel.

One of the earliest of Verdi's operas remaining in the repertory, Rigoletto was a success from its first production in 1851 in Venice. Based on Victor Hugo's Le Roi s'amuse, the libretto appealed to Verdi immensely: in later years, he claimed it was the best that had ever come his way. In the story of the tragic jester and his daughter, Verdi found a subject magnificently suited to his talents. Grove's Dictionary notes: "The music is like a flood, carrying all before it. It is remarkable for bold characterization, for superbly effective dramatic strokes and for variety of eolour and atmosphere." Those qualities have kept the work in the forefront of the operatic repertoire for more than a century. This Dover volume, reproduced from the standard edition, offers a golden opportunity to legions of opera lovers to have the complete score of this masterpiece in an attractive, inexpensive format. Stephen Foster's music "is part of every American's culture," wrote composer Virgil Thomson, and certainly this is true, for few American composers have created songs as lastingly popular as "Beautiful Dreamer," "Oh! Susanna," "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair," "Swanee River" (properly "Old Folks at Home"), "Camptown Races" and "My Old Kentucky Home, Good Night." The fact remains, however, that Foster's melodies have suffered continually at the hands of revisers and arrangers, so that often what we hear today is only a corrupt version of what Foster actually composed. This book corrects that situation by assembling forty songs as Foster originally wrote them. Many have been reproduced from original first-edition sheets, others from early editions, others from facsimiles of first editions. All are re-produced with their covers, to help capture the flavor of the period. Along with the old favorites listed above you will find "The Glendy Burk," "Ah May the Red Rose Live Alway! Massa's in de Cold Ground,
