The statement that China is passing through an unprecedent-edrevolution has almost become a platitude, but its very obviousnessin no way diminishes its truth. The changes which this huge andvenerable country experienced in the past are negligible whencompared with the developments of the last decade. The reason forthis difference in degree-which amounts to a qualitative change-isthat developments in the past hardly influenced fundamentals, ifthey ever did so at all, whereas the present transformation deeplyaffects them. It is even consciously aimed at changing the socialstructure and all that this entails.

This unique book shows why many believe Chinais the next "tidal wave" of opportun ty for art collector.s: thesheer creative output, the artistic variety and diversity nowblooming from within a country where, only a few decades ago, suchexpression would be repressed. In the West, contemporary Chinese art has becomethe subject of intense fascination and speculation. In this book, writer and photographer Jon Burris profiles twenty-five topcontemporary Chinese painters, sculptors, photographers, andconceptual artists, taking the reader into their studios andpresenting intimate glimpses into their life and work. As a result,he offers a lingering portrait of the contemporary Chinese artscene. From the symbolist paintings of Zhang Xiaogang,to the cynical realist works of Yue Minjun and the political popcanvases of Wang Guangyi, Burris details the historical, political, and cultural mimesis shaping China's contemporary artists.Amust-have book for admirers of contemporary Chinese art.
The complexion of the empresses attending to state affairs was fairly complicated. Some had to represent their sons because the emperor was really too young to rule a dynasty; some, due to their ambition for monopolizing power, deliberately supported and enthroned a young emperor who could be easily controlled by them after their husbands died, thus to gain the real power of the court. Some empresses even disenthroned the crown prince designated by their husbands after his death or had the new emperor killed to gain control of the state for themselves. Some regent empresses certainly played an important role in stabilizing the dynasty; but others, however, brought a lot of troubles and crises to the dynasty due to their high ambition and low quality.
