Off Beat presents photographs taken in New York City in 2008and 2009, when A-chan began working with black and white film. Theimages were made in the same wandering spirit as those in VibrantHome, also to be published this season by Steidl. A-chan exploredthe streets of New York, allowing her compositions to revealthemselves rather than searching for pre-determined motifs. Pigeonsperched on a branch, the lyrical geometry of serviettes on a table,or the play of shapes created by a bus silhouetted against traffic:such is the material of A-chan's restless, charming vision.

Whether they are of Abu Dhabi, California, Egypt or Emilia, all of the images he produces are lit with a constant physical light and elements that this photographer seems to always have with him the way he does with his camera bag, and through which all he wants to do is observe the world. I find such an aesthetic to be more that of a painter than a photographer somehow. Better yet, that of a post-documentary or neo-pictorialist photographer, who experiences and conceives his work to be the exprssive gesture of an artist for whom the subject is above all the opportunity for a tremendous but constant variation in his view of the world.

Design is the single most important factor in creating asuccessful photograph. The ability to see the potential for astrong picture and then organize the graphic elements into aneffective, compelling composition has always been one of the keyskills in making photographs. Of course, digital photography hasbrought a new, exciting aspect to design first because the instantfeedback from a digital camera allows immediate appraisal andimprovement; and second because image-editing tools make itpossible to alter and enhance the design after the shutter has beenpressed. This has had a profound effect on the way digitalphotographers take pictures. The Photographers Eye shows how anyonecan develop an eye for seeing great digital photos. The bookexplores all the traditional approaches to composition and design, but crucially, it also addresses the new digital technique ofshooting in the knowledge that a picture will later be edited, manipulated, or montaged to result in a final image that may bevery different from the one
The work of German photographer Louisa Marie Summer is driven by her interest in discovering the inner workings of other peoples lives. She is eager to look at what is beyond the surface and questions with her camera what she sees. Louisas photographs share her experience with Jennifer, a young second-generation Puerto Rican woman, whom one day Louisa approached in South Providence. Jennifer lives with her native American partner and their four children in a run-down three-bedroom apartment at or near the lower end of the socio-economic ladder. South Providence is an urban neighborhood with a large African-American and Hispanic population, high unemployment and crime rates, and where many families live well below the poverty line. Over time Louisa and the family developed a close relationship based on mutual understanding, respect, and trust. Accordingly, Louisas photographs, captured over a year, provide an intimate view into the daily life of Jennifers family. They illustrate how a 26 year old mother
