Literature about Durer fills library shelves. Does this meaneverything has already been said about the artist? Far from it,according to the scholars at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum andtheir international partners in the Early Durer Project. This bookdeals with the core phenomena of Durers early work, ranging fromthe artists biography and surroundings to the question of Durersrole as the archetype of the modern artist. New sociologicalapproaches allow us to interpret Durers ideal neighbourhood as asource of inspiration for the artists work, resituating Durer inthe artistic context of his time, at an exciting crossroad betweenthe imitation of traditional painting and the self-consciousrenewal of his profession. Photographs of Durers early work, manyof which are new and published here for the first time, completethe publication, which will establish a new basis for a modernunderstanding of Germanys most famous artist.

Itis, for the first time, the full story of a minor art form, analyzing the cultural revolution wrought by Schnabel, Toscanini,Callas, Rattle, the Three Tenors, and Charlotte Church. It is thestory of how stars were made and broken by the record business; howa war criminal conspired with a concentration-camp victim to createa record empire; and how advancing technology, boardroom wars, public credulity and unscrupulous exploitation shaped the musicalbackdrop to our modern lives. The book ends with a suitable shrineto classical recording: the author's critical selectio
