Independent, multivoiced, wicked, political, spiritual, sexual, achingly prosaic, and above all, serious. Plus funny. Which was exactly the point: to address the needs of the world - all parts of the globe - and wrap it up in one big blanket called Humanity. With Colors, Tibor Kalman shook out the contents of his brain and over the course of 6 years and 13 bilingual issues, he took on such topics as: food (and hunger), that finetuned organism called ecology, recreation, religion, AIDS, shopping, racism, royalty and assorted demi-gods, sports, travel, even heaven. For Kalman, the self-described "perverse optimist," Colors was about casting a net over all of humanity, warts and all. Its irreverence, its ability to raise hackles and continually question the status quo was not about knocking down people, but about raising the bar on tolerance and a humane way of living. It was, as he once said, about using graphic design as a medium "for telling the truth."

The concept of programmed cell death, or apoptosis, hasexploded into a major scientific field of interest for cellbiologists, oncologists, and many other biomedical researchers.Apoptosis occurs throughout the lifetime of most multicellularorganisms. W. Dean Sutcliffe investigates one of the greatest yet leastunderstood repertories of Western keyboard music: the 555 keyboardsonatas of Domenico Scarlatti. Scarlatti occupies a position ofsolitary splendour in musical history. The sources of his style areoften obscure and his immediate influence is difficult to discern.Further, the lack of hard documentary evidence has hinderedmusicological activity. Dr Sutcliffe offers not just a thoroughreconsideration of the historical factors that have contributed toScarlatti's position, but also sustained engagement with the music, offering both individual readings and broader commentary of anunprecedented kind. A principal task of this book is to remove thecomposer from his critical ghetto (however honourable) and redefinehis image. In so doing it will reflect on the historiographicaldifficulties involved in understanding eighteenth-century musicalstyle.
