"It is of great importance," Bart6k wrote, "that anyone who is involved with musicshould be able to obtain [composers'] works in editions which interpret precisely the author's intentions, not of such kind that may have been arbitrarily modified or forged by some adapter." Thirty-six years after his death, in the centennial of his birth (1881), Bart6k's wish has finally been realized in his own work. This collection of early piano music is the second volume in the Bartk Archive Edition, the only edition of the great Hungarian composer to be based on corrections from his memorabilia or original editions in the New York Bart6k Archive. Comparison has also been made withHungarian editions published since 1951, which are based on holdings of the Budapest Bart6k Archivum. It is appropriate to continue the Bart6k Archive Edition with a second volume of piano music, for, as Grove's Dictionay notes: "The pianoforte was his most natural medium of expression It was the pianotorte that made Bart6k express his h
The stunning photographic reportage of Father Leone Nani presents early twentieth-century China as seen through the lens of an "outsider" who brought to life the people, places and traditions of a lost empire. The sheer quality and quantity of his pictures, the choice of subjects and handling of widely different situations, have reserved Nani the right to be considered a master of black-and-white photography. Leone Nani (1880-1935) lived in central China from 1904 to 1914. His missionary work took him to remote villages where he captured a world beyond the reach of other Westerners. Working in large format (mostly on glass plates he developed and printed himself in his mobile studio), Nani portrayed young couples, dignitaries, peasants and artisans. Equally gifted as an observer and reporter, he recorded everyday life scenes, religious ceremonies, architecture, and landscapes. Beautifully reproduced here in duotone, Nani's extraordinary material bears witness to a turbulent time in China's histor

This rich selection of arias ranges from the dawn of Italian opera to the late nineteenth century. Arranged chronologically, it encompasses historically and artistically significant operatic modes as well as many varieties of airs, from the earliest flowerings of Florentine monody through the refined stylings of the golden age of bel canto and the freer, more dramatic fashions of the early twen-tieth century. The collection opens with Giulio Caccini's sixteenth-century madrigal,"Amarilli, mia bella," which was written in the course of the attempts to revive authentic performances of ancient Greek drama that resulted in the birth of the Italian opera. A pair of arias from Le Nozze di Figaro--"Voi, che sapete" and "Deh vieni, non tardar'--offer excellent examples of Mozart's gift to opera's development: the expression of characters' mental, moral, and physical states by musical means. Other highlights include Bizet's "PrOs des remparts," from Carmen; "Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix" and "Amour! viens aider
A digital camera is functionally identical to a traditional film camera in all respects except image storage, right? Not at all, and Mikkel Aaland shows exactly why in his excellent Shooting Digital. He shows why digital cameras--the point-and-shoot variety as well as fancier models meant for professional photographers--are overall neither better nor worse than cameras of older design, and goes on to show you how to take advantage of their special traits. He shows how to compensate for their shortcomings, too, notably shutter lag (for which he documents a useful testing procedure) and color fringing. Though there's some coverage of creating animated GIFs, this book generally sticks to shooting time and leaves editing to other volumes. 作者简介: Mikkel Aaland is an award-winning photographer and author of ten books, including Photoshop Elements 4 Solutions from Sybex. His photography has been published in Wired, Newsweek, and several European periodicals, and he is a regular guest on the television

The next big trend in typography is the hand-crafted letter.Whereas slick computer-generated graphics often impart a sense of progress or technology, hand-drawn graphics are a return to the creator's immediacy. Increasingly, advertising campaigns, record covers and branding are adopting the rough-hewn style of manually created typography. This is the first publication to offer a complete overview of handwritten typographics, drawing on an extensive array of examples from around the world. An introduction by design historian Steven Heller places contemporary work in the broader context of design. At the heart of the book are hundreds of examples, presented in creative themes: 'Scrawl', letterforms that are raw, splotchy and untidy; 'Scratch', scraped, cut and gouged fonts; 'Script',type that is sinuous, curlicued and ornate; 'Stitch', letters that have been sewn, sutured and embroidered; 'Simulate',typefaces that have been redrawn or copied; 'Shadow',dimensional, voluminous and monumental letterforms;'Sugg
Stunning and vibrant artwork can be found on buildings, sidewalks, street signs, and other surfaces in cities from New York to London to Barcelona. Street Art presents a comprehensive overview of this movement that began in the late 1960s with anonymous spray-can art in New York and Philadelphia and that has since grown into a cross-cultural phenomenon over the last four decades. Street Art begins with an explanation of the difference between street art and graffiti, along with new trends and styles. Each medium is then explored in a different chapter—stickers and posters, stencils, textured surfaces, traffic signs, buildings and furniture. Also included are chapters on street art characters and panoramic murals. Woven throughout are biographies of the artists—all internationally known—and an interview with each one. Street Art is an exciting look at an art movement that has been around for decades but that is just now beginning to emerge in the mainstream.

With the premiere in 1908 of Rapsodie Espagnole, Ravel's first entirely orchestral composition, the French composer achieved renown as a highly original and imaginative composer. In 1911, he recast the Mother Goose Suite, his extremely successful music for piano four-hands, as an orchestral work. Based on five fairy tales--among them "Sleeping Beauty," "Tom Thumb," and "Beauty and the Beast"--this collection of children's pieces continues to enchant listeners of all ages with its variety of moods from jubilation to haunting despair. In 1910, more than a decade after its initial appearance as a piano work, Ravel transcribed his evocative Pavane for a Dead Princess for orchestra. To this day, it continues to be one of his best-known, most frequently performed compositions. The rich orchestral settings of these three works have made them favorites among concert goers around the world, ensuring the popularity of this full, authoritative and inexpensive edition.
Diego Rivera is celebrated by Gerry Souter as a virtuosoMexican muralist, where he could express at once his legend andmyths, his technical talent, his intense story-telling focus andself-indulgent ideological convictions. His easel paintings anddrawings also constitute a large body of both his early and latework and are represented in the book. Gerry Souter, the author ofthe remarkable Frida Kahlo, overcomes his huge admiration for DiegoRivera to give the artist a human dimension, found in his politicalchoices, his love affairs and his belief that this truth wasMexico, the language of his thoughts, the blood in his veins, theazure sky above his resting place.

Vibrant with characteristic melody and rhythm, the Dances celebrate Czech dance forms, Czech humor and folk merriment as well as the supreme individuality of Dvorfik's musical temperament. The music of Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) is an important link between the innovations of late Romanticism and the experimentation of the early 20th century. In his long life, Faure witnessed the achievements of both Richard Wagner and Alban Berg. A student of Saint-Saens, Faure, in turn, taught Ravel and was an influential mentor to the young modernists of Les Six, among them Francis Poulenc, Darius Milhaud and Arthur Honegger. The twenty-four works in this volume-twelve nocturnes and twelve barcarolles composed over a span of forty years-form a splendid musical document of Faure's evolution as a composer. In his first nocturne and first barcarolle, composed in his early thirties, the influences of Romanticism, of Chopin and Saint-Sachs, are felt. In the last nocturne and barcarolle, both composed in 1915, when Faure was 70, we hear the bold, lean musical language of the 20th century. These piano masterworks reveal Faure's distinctive musical gifts: subtle rhythmic fluidity, harmonic daring, free-flowin
