Although he composed in many musical genres, Vivaldi truly redefined the concerto and made it distinctly his own. And although adept at writing for a variety of instruments, the violin remained his primary instrument. The composer's 12 concertos known as "L'estro armonico" [Harmonic Innovation] are distinguished from all other ensemble music of their time by their empha-sis on virtuosity, their rhythmic exuberance, flexible instrumentation, indepen-dent approaches to thematic development, and their genuine innovations in concerto form. This magnificent work, dedicated to the Florentine Grand Prince Ferdinand Ⅲ de' Medici, incorporates twelve works organized as four sets. Each set contains a concerto for four solo violins, one for two solo violins, and one for a single solo violin. A distinguished addition to the music literature, this volume has been newly edited and engraved under the guidance of Dr. Eleanor Selfridge-Field, a recog-nized authority on music of the Italian Baroque, with associat
Of the man considered his artistic and spiritual successor, Schumann wrote: "'It seemed to me ……that……a musician would inevitably appear to whom it was vouchsafed to give the highest and most ideal expression to the tendencies of our time And he has come, a young man over whose cradle Graces and Heroes stood watch. His name is Johannes Brahms." By 1853 Brahms had emerged as a force in music, and would afterwards be aeknowledged as the greatest master of the symphonic form of the last half of the century. In that generation of composers, only Dvorak (for whom he had a special regard and to whom he gave invaluable aid) produced as much chamber music as the prolific Brahms. This prodigious outpouring, perhaps more than any other aspect of Brahms's oeuvre, provides a clear and uninterrupted view of his artistic development. Here reproduced in this handsome, inexpensive volume is a superb seleetion of chamber works masterful compositions by Brahms, written for violin, viola, cello and piano.
In the autumn of 1819, refreshed from a three-month stay in the Austrian countryside, Franz Schubert returned to Vienna to begin one of his major choral works, the great Mass in A-fiat Major. Completed three years later, this work has been praised as a grand harmonic adventure with deeply affecting moments of rare poignance. Along with the Mass No. 6 in E-flat Maior, it is the most performed of Schubert's masses. The latter work--composed in 1828, the year of his death was among the final musical achievements of Schubert's brief life. It is especially memorable for its touching commemoration of the birth of Christ in a haunting lullaby, and its powerful evocation of the cruel spectacle of the crucifixion. Both masterworks of church music have been reprinted from the definitive Breitkopf & Hartel Critical Edition of 1884-1897. Separate English translations of the Latin texts are provided.

In 1931, Diego Rivera was the subject of The Museum of ModernArt s second monographic exhibition, which set new attendancerecords in its five-week run. The Museum brought Rivera to New Yorksix weeks before the show s opening and gave him on-site studiospace. There he produced five "portable murals" --large blocks offrescoed plaster, slaked lime and wood that feature bold imagesdrawn from Mexican subject matter and address themes of revolutionand class inequity. After the opening, to great publicity, Riveraadded three more murals, now taking on New York subjects throughmonumental images of the urban working class and the city duringthe Great Depression. Die Entfuehrung aus dem Serail--the Abduction from the Seraglio-- was one of Mozart's first operatic hits, and received performances all over Europe, even if the emperor did think it contained too many notes. Too many tenors is closer to the mark (the male roles include two tenors, one bass, and one character who only speaks), but this singspiel is a bright and bubbly work, endearing in its comic scenes and impressive in its serious moments. This score is one of Dover's reprints of other publishers. That means that it's not the most up-to-date edition available, that the words appear in German only, and that it's not as suitable for singers to use as a plain piano- vocal score would be. But this is a reasonably priced version that gives the student or enthusiast the opportunity to check out just how Mozart achieved that great "Turkish" instrumental color.

Mahler's third and fourth symphonies mark a turning point in his development as a composer. Symphony No. 3 (1896) predominantly follows the musical style of the earlier two symphonies, which tended to emphasize a single melodic line with subordinate harmonies. Symphony No. 4 (1900) embodies the more contrapuntal style that characterizes his later symphonic works. At the same time, these works bring Mahler to the end of his "Wunderhorn years," when his inspiration derived strongly from Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth's Magic Horn), an early 19th-century collection of folklike poetry that celebrated themes of nature. The Third Symphony, scored for a massive orchestra, was conceived as a vast nature cycle in six movements. These include the great opening march, the moving setting for alto of Nietzsche's "O Mensch! Gib Acht!" and the scintillating bell song for women's and boys' choirs "Es sungen drei Engel." The Fourth Symphony, more restrained in expression yet filled with affecting melody,
