First published in1982, this revised book traces Canaletto's career from hisbeginnings as a scene-painter with his father to the work of hislater years in artists. Canaletto was interested in depicting theworld around him, but unlike most of his fellow artists, but he wasmore than a mere recorder of the amazing scenery of Venice or ofGeorgian England. He had the power, in the words of one of hiscontemporaries, to paint so that "the eye is deceived and trulybelieves it is the real thing it sees", and his insight andtechnical skills were so dazzling that it was thought he must relyon some sort of optical apparatus. His first views of Venice werepainted around 1725 for Stefano Conti of Lucca. Soon after he cameinto contact with Joseph Smith, British Consul in Venice, who wasto become his most important patron. One of Bach's principal activities during his years in Leipzig was his direction, between 1729 and 1741, of the local collegium rnusicum, a voluntary association of professional musicians and university students who gave regular weekly public concerts. For these popular occasions, Bach composed the six concertos included in this volume. Important historically because they are among the first keyboard concertos ever written, they continue to be studied and performed because of their rare and exuberant musical qualities. The six concertos are: Concerto in C Minor for 2 Harpsichords, BWV 1060 Concerto in C Major for 2 Harpsichords, BWV 1061 Concerto in C Minor for 2 Harpsichords, BWV 1062 Concerto in D Minor for 3 Harpsichords, BWV 1063 Concerto in C Major for 3 Harpsichords, BWV 1064 Concerto in A Minor for 4 Harpsichords, BWV 1065 Several of the concertos are based on works Bach had previously composed for other instrumental combinations. In the autumn of 1819, refreshed from a three-month stay in the Austrian countryside, Franz Schubert returned to Vienna to begin one of his major choral works, the great Mass in A-fiat Major. Completed three years later, this work has been praised as a grand harmonic adventure with deeply affecting moments of rare poignance. Along with the Mass No. 6 in E-flat Maior, it is the most performed of Schubert's masses. The latter work--composed in 1828, the year of his death was among the final musical achievements of Schubert's brief life. It is especially memorable for its touching commemoration of the birth of Christ in a haunting lullaby, and its powerful evocation of the cruel spectacle of the crucifixion. Both masterworks of church music have been reprinted from the definitive Breitkopf & Hartel Critical Edition of 1884-1897. Separate English translations of the Latin texts are provided.
