Few artists have created as much controversy or survived itwith greater fame than Edouard Manet. In his day, the avant-gardewas not only a challenge to the traditions of art, but it was alsoa gunshot fired at society as a whole. With his painting Olympia(1869), Manet was to become, to quote Degas, as famous asGaribaldi. Yet how the urbane and diffident son of a bourgeoisfamily became the father of both Realism and Impressionism is acomplex and fascinating story that has too often been reduced totextbook clichés. As Manet has become recognized as a touchstonefor historical change but also for interpretations of how thatchange came about, his individual story has become all the morerelevant to the study of art history. Moreover, far from being anartists to shrink behind his work, one of Manets mostcharacteristic practices was to leave an indelible trace of his ownpersonal identity within his paintings, as illustrated throughoutthe volume by eminent scholar James H. Rubin. This lavishlyillustrated volume

FRENCH-GERMAN PAINTER COUNT BALTHASAR KLOSSOWSKI DE ROLA (1908-2001), KNOWN AS BALTHUS, SHOCKED THE PARISIAN ART WORLD IN 1934 WITH HIS DREAMY, SENSUAL, NEO-CLASSICAL PORTRAITS OF NYMPHETS AT A TIME WHEN SURREALISM AND ABSTRACTION WERE DE RIGUEUR. AS A PROVOCATEUR, BALTHUS WAS OFTEN SCORNED; AS AN ARTIST, HE WAS WIDELY EMBRACED AS A PRODIGY. IN RESPONSE TO CRITICS OF HIS REALIST STYLE, BALTHUS SAID: "THE REAL ISN'T WHAT YOU THINK YOU SEE. ONE CAN BE A REALIST OF THE UNREAL AND A FIGURATIVE PAINTER OF THE INVISIBLE." HIS EROTIC, POETIC PAINTINGS LIVE ON AS EXAMPLES OF THE BEST FIGURATIVE WORK OF THE MODERN ERA.
With an Introduction and Notes by Dr. Jacqueline Belanger, University of Cardiff A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man represents the transitional stage between the realism of Joyce's Dubliners and the symbolism of Ulysses, and is essential to the understanding of the later work. The novel is a highly autobiographical account of the adolescence of Stephen Dedalus, who reappears in Ulysses, and who comes to realize that before he can become a true artist, he must rid himself of the stultifying effects of the religion, politics and essential bigotry of his background in late 19th century Ireland. Written with a light touch, this is perhaps the most accessible of Joyce's works.

When the final tally of key movers in the plastic arts of this century is compiled, there is no doubt that maestro of movement Alexander Calder (1898-1976), the man who put the swing into sculpture, will be near numero uno. Calder took it off the plinth, gave it to the wind, and left us kinetic playgrounds of the spirit. He operated at the point where Modernity and nature Fused, developing an environmental art that changed the medium Forever. Visiting his Paris atelier in 1932, Duchamp coined the term "Mobiles" For Calder's delicate wire and disc pieces, constructions that would soon become immensely popular. But he didn't rest on his innovations. Friends with Miro, Mondrian and Leger, Calder also turned his hand to painting, drawing, gouaches, toys, textiles and utensil design. A graphic master who sketched as much in air as in ink, the Sixties and Seventies saw Calder take on the monumental, translating the dynamics of cities into both his Mobiles and "Stabiles". At a time when sculpture was perceived to be
Famed for his focused observation of nature, Flemish painterJan van Eyck (c. 1395–1441) studied fauna and flora in theirnatural environment and under carefully chosen lighting conditions, and then achieved a breathtaking and convincing realism in hispaintings. Each panel is a collection of minuscule details renderedwith superb clarity from foreground to background—or at least thatis the impression at first glance. As this book reveals, that isprecisely where Van Eyck’s exceptional talent lay: He understoodthat the human brain is able to supplement visual perception wherenecessary. Here, details from Van Eyck’s paintings are organized bysuch themes as nature, architecture, daily life, fabrics, glass, jewelry and mirrors, and portraits. This is an unprecedented lookat the work of a popular master.

The music of Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) is an important link between the innovations of late Romanticism and the experimentation of the early 20th century. In his long life, Faure witnessed the achievements of both Richard Wagner and Alban Berg. A student of Saint-Saens, Faure, in turn, taught Ravel and was an influential mentor to the young modernists of Les Six, among them Francis Poulenc, Darius Milhaud and Arthur Honegger. The twenty-four works in this volume-twelve nocturnes and twelve barcarolles composed over a span of forty years-form a splendid musical document of Faure's evolution as a composer. In his first nocturne and first barcarolle, composed in his early thirties, the influences of Romanticism, of Chopin and Saint-Sachs, are felt. In the last nocturne and barcarolle, both composed in 1915, when Faure was 70, we hear the bold, lean musical language of the 20th century. These piano masterworks reveal Faure's distinctive musical gifts: subtle rhythmic fluidity, harmonic daring, free-flowin
Two standards of the Romantic repertoire for piano and orchestra are available here for the first time in a single volume: Liszt's symphonic poem Totentanz (Dance of Death) and his Fantasy on Hungarian Folk Tunes, a work of the same lyric grace and vital rhythms as his famous Hungarian Rhapsodies. The Romantic composers were fascinated by death, and the Totentanz is Liszt's masterpiece of the macabre. Based on the familiar "Dies Irae" plainchant melody from the Requiem Mass, it consists of six diabolical variations that demand a virtuoso performance from the piano and orchestra. Like most of the nationalistic music of its era, the Fantasy on Hungarian Folk Tunes was not derived directly from native melodies but written in their spirit. Hungarian songs, Liszt wrote, "became the blood of my soul--an admirable and magnificent kaleidoscope: sadness, sorrow, suffering, depth of spirit, pathos, gracefulness, reverie, gravity." Reproduced from authoritative editions, both of these scores are
