Literature about Durer fills library shelves. Does this meaneverything has already been said about the artist? Far from it,according to the scholars at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum andtheir international partners in the Early Durer Project. This bookdeals with the core phenomena of Durers early work, ranging fromthe artists biography and surroundings to the question of Durersrole as the archetype of the modern artist. New sociologicalapproaches allow us to interpret Durers ideal neighbourhood as asource of inspiration for the artists work, resituating Durer inthe artistic context of his time, at an exciting crossroad betweenthe imitation of traditional painting and the self-consciousrenewal of his profession. Photographs of Durers early work, manyof which are new and published here for the first time, completethe publication, which will establish a new basis for a modernunderstanding of Germanys most famous artist.

Music defines us. To return the favor, we’ll stick up withzealous passion for the performers and bands that we love . . . andheap aspersions and ridicule upon people who dare to place theirallegiances above our own. In Rock and Roll Cage Match, today’sleading cultural critics, humorists, music journalists, andmusicians themselves take sides in thirty of the all-time juiciest“who’s better” musical disputes. It’s not because they hitharder (they do). It’s not because they are tighter (they’redefinitely not). . . . It’s because Metallica is fundamentallyabout respecting rules—of metal, of production, of technicality—andNirvana is about breaking those rules down in the pursuit ofinnovation. Metallica was metal. Nirvana was something else.” Touré on Michael Ja

Few artists have created as much controversy or survived itwith greater fame than Edouard Manet. In his day, the avant-gardewas not only a challenge to the traditions of art, but it was alsoa gunshot fired at society as a whole. With his painting Olympia(1869), Manet was to become, to quote Degas, as famous asGaribaldi. Yet how the urbane and diffident son of a bourgeoisfamily became the father of both Realism and Impressionism is acomplex and fascinating story that has too often been reduced totextbook clichés. As Manet has become recognized as a touchstonefor historical change but also for interpretations of how thatchange came about, his individual story has become all the morerelevant to the study of art history. Moreover, far from being anartists to shrink behind his work, one of Manets mostcharacteristic practices was to leave an indelible trace of his ownpersonal identity within his paintings, as illustrated throughoutthe volume by eminent scholar James H. Rubin. This lavishlyillustrated volume

The development of Soviet realist painting over fifty years through a selection of works from Russias leading museums. Socialist Realism was and remains an exceptional phenomenon in twentieth century art. It bore the challenge of promoting realist figuration on a scale without parallel in the rest of the world, employing the talents of thousands of artists over decades and spreading over an immense and varied empire. By glorifying the social role of art, affirming the primary value of content as opposed to form and restoring the central role of traditional practices, socialist Realism was the declared opponent of the modern movement, and in fact represented the only completely alternative artistic system. Created by the great Russian artists (Deineka, Malevic, Adlivankin, Laktionov, Plastov, Brodskij, Korzhev) the works present a multiplicity of questions, themes and formal approaches to art spanning from the last phases of the civil war to the beginnings of the Brezhnev era, stopping at the early 1970
