《語石》一書，既是古代石刻學的集大成者，也是近代石刻學的開山之作。時至 ，《語石》確定的研究範疇和構建的理論體系仍為石刻學者所沿用。可以說，《語石》是石刻學 當之無愧的經典之作。 一部經典不僅定本可以嘉惠學林，其文本產生的過程本身也具有廣泛的借鑒意義。《語石》撰寫始於清光緒二十六年（一九〇〇）， 終刊刻於宣统元年（一九〇九），其間大致經過了撰寫、補撰、校改、謄寫、批改、刊刻等幾個階段。此次影印上海圖書館所藏的兩部《語石》稿本，一係初稿本，一係謄清稿本，二者與《緣督廬日記》一起勾勒了《語石》成書的整個過程。
