TASCHEN's Great Adventure began back in 1980, when eighteen-year-old Benedikt Taschen opened a shop in his native Cologne,Germany, to market his massive comics collection. Within a year he began publishing catalogs promoting his wares, but it wasn't until 1984 that his first art-book breakthrough occurred: he purchased 40,000 remainder copies of a Magritte book printed in English, reselling them for a fraction of their original price. From a young age, Taschen had been interested in art but found that art books were too expensive and hard to obtain, and the success of this daring move proved that Taschen was not alone in thinking that the art-book market should be democratized. Soon he began reprinting books under his own name for budget prices and the next year he published his first original title and the first book in the Basic Artseries: Picasso. Before long, high-quality-yet-still-inexpensive hard-cover books were added to the lineup and in 1989 the landmark double-jumbo Van Gogh: The Complete Painting

With a complete statistical record since the 1896 founding of the modern Games—including medals won and times, distances, or scores recorded by the top eight competitors in all events (from staples such as the marathon to long-discontinued competitions such as the tug of war), this encyclopedic tome contains anything anyone could ever need or want to know about the modern Olympic Games. Far from a dry compendium of names, numbers, and scoring systems, this book also contains a summary history of every event at each of the 26 modern Games, enriched with an extraordinary wealth of Olympic lore and anecdote. The authors provide thought-provoking analysis of issues and controversies from shamateurism to drug-taking and corruption, and they have sieved through more than a century of Olympic history to assemble a mind-boggling collection of stories that range from the inspiring, through the comic, to the bizarre. Such long-forgotten characters are included as the boy who was plucked from the streets of Paris
The Case Study House program (1945 1966) was an exceptional, innovative event in the history of American architecture and remains to this day unique. The program, which concentrated on the Los Angeles area and oversaw the design of 36 prototype homes, sought to make available plans for modern residences that could be easily and cheaply constructed during the postwar building boom. Highly experimental, the program generated houses that were designed to redefine the modern home, and thus had a pronounced influence on architecture American and international both during the program's existence and even to this day. This compact guide includes all projects featured in our XL version, with over 150 photos and plans and a map of where all houses are (or were) located.
Guest-edited by Luigi Prestinenza Puglisi Every five or six years, a different country takes the architectural lead in Europe: England came to the fore with High Tech in the early 1980s; by the end of the 1980s, France came to prominence with Fran ois Mitterand's great Parisian projects; in the 1990s, Spain and Portugal were discovering a new tradition; and recently the focus has been on the Netherlands. In this ever shifting European landscape, Italy is now set to challenge the status quo. Already home to some of the world's most renowned architects - Renzo Piano, Massimiliano Fuksas and Antonio Citterio - it also has many talented architects like Mario Cucinella, Italo Rota, Stefano Boeri, the ABDR group and Maria Giuseppina Grasso Cannizzo, who are now gaining international attention. Moreover there is an extraordinary emergence of younger architects - the Erasmus generation - who are beginning to realise some very promising buildings of their own. AD+ Interior Eye Yale Art Galler

Naked Architecture Valerio Paolo Mosco An account of one of the most interesting phenomena of contemporary architecture: the return to the structure and methods with which contemporary constructions are realized. Over the last ten years architecture would seem to have rediscovered engineering. Now that the Postmodern period, in which the structure of buildings was camouflaged by coverings of every kind, has passed, architecture today seems to have undressed, almost as though wishing to show how it is made (and to render this spectacular). On the other hand, the rediscovery in recent years of plastic form has brought about a closer relationship between architects and engineers. In the wake of the phenomenon that is the work of Santiago Calatrava, figures of engineer-architects have emerged such as Cecil Balmond, Sasaki and Guy Nordenson, who have been able to give a strongly "engineering-oriented" guise to ever more complex building sites. To this we must add the rise of new issues, such as that of envi
Site analysis is the key to a well-designed project. In fact, the careful and complete analysis of a site and its surroundingcontext can lead to better development proposals, smoother designimplementation, and, ultimately, higher quality builtenvironments. This carefully conceived book is the first to detail each crucialstep in the site analysis and planning process, from site selectionthrough design development. It shows how these activities areintegrated to arrive at a site plan that successfully balances theneeds of the client and other stakeholders with the site'ssuitability for the intended land uses. With more than 130illustrations, this book includes many outstanding examples of mapsand site plans created by leading land planning firms. It offersguidance on: * Site identification, evaluation, and selection * Site inventories of physical, biological, and culturalattributes * Land use suitability analysis using Geographic InformationSystems (GIS) * Concept planning and

To Alvar Aalto life, art, architecture, and creativity were inseparable from everyday work. When developing ideas or researching a design challenge he moved as easily in the world of natural sciences as he did in the world of art. This remarkable book celebrates the 1998 centenary of Alvar Aalto's birth. It is not the most comprehensive book on his work, but it is without question the most sumptuous and poetic. 23 projects from different decades are featured, ranging from private houses to public buildings. The text, written by Marku Lahtti, director of the Alvar Alto Museum, intelligently complements the photographic genius of Maija Holma, whose bold images capture the finest details of Aalto's structures and interiors. Works include Finland Hall, Helsinki; Art Museum, Aalborg, Denmark; Helsinki University of Technology, Helsinki; House of Culture, Helsinki; Villa Mairea, Noormarkku; and Aalto's own house in Helsinki. rban Design Since 1945: A Global Perspective reviews theemergence of urban design as a global phenomenon. The book openswith the urgent need to rebuild cities and re-house the millions ofrefugees living in camps and shantytowns at the end of the SecondWorld War. Against this background, the book traces the collapse ofthe modernist, comprehensive state-planning schemes on both sidesof the Iron Curtain as global corporations emerged, concentratingon networks and enclaves. It describes how Latin America and thenAsia began a rapid urbanisation process, shifting the global urbancentre away from Europe and overturning existing urban designmodels. This resulted in global megacities of an unprecedentedscale, often with large associated shantytowns. By outlining the dominant models in urban design over the lastsixty years - the metropolis, the megalopolis, the fragmentedmetropolis and the global megacity - the book provides an essentialframework for students of the subject.
