The 'Flynn effect' refers to the massive increase in IQ testscores over the course of the twentieth century. Does it mean thateach generation is more intelligent than the last? Does it suggesthow each of us can enhance our own intelligence? Professor Flynn isfinally ready to give his own views. He asks what intelligencereally is and gives a surprising and illuminating answer. Thisexpanded paperback edition includes three important new essays. Thefirst contrasts the art of writing cognitive history with thescience of measuring intelligence and reports data. The secondoutlines how we might get a complete theory of intelligence, andthe third details Flynn's reservations about Gardner's theory ofmultiple intelligences. A fascinating book that bridges the gulfseparating our minds from those of our ancestors a century ago, andmakes an important contribution to our understanding of humanintelligence.

For more than a half-century, Israel has been forced to defendits existence against international political disapproval, racistcalumny, and violence visited upon its citizens by terrorists ofmany stripes. While nations have always been made to defend theirmoral, political, economic, or social actions, Israel has theunique plight of having to defend its very right to exist. Covering Israel's struggle for existence from the Britishoccupation and the UN’s partition of Palestine, to the dashed hopesof the Oslo Accords and the second intifada, Yaacov Lozowick trainsan enlightening, forthright eye on Israel’s strengths and failures.A lifelong liberal and peace activist, he explores Israel’snational and regional political, social, and moral obligations aswell as its right to secure its borders and repel attacks bothphilosophical and military. Combining rich historical perspectiveand passionate conviction, Right to Exist sets forth theagenda of a people and a nation, and elegantly articulates Isra
It is history on an epic yet human scale. Vast in scope, exhaustive in original research, written with passion, narrativeskill, and human sympathy, A People's Tragedy is a profound accountof the Russian Revolution for a new generation. Many consider theRussian Revolution to be the most significant event of thetwentieth century. Distinguished scholar Orlando Figes presents apanorama of Russian society on the eve of that revolution, and thennarrates the story of how these social forces were violentlyerased. Within the broad stokes of war and revolution are miniaturehistories of individuals, in which Figes follows the main players'fortunes as they saw their hopes die and their world crash intoruins. Unlike previous accounts that trace the origins of therevolution to overreaching political forces and ideals, Figesargues that the failure of democracy in 1917 was deeply rooted inRussian culture and social history and that what had started as apeople's revolution contained the seeds of its degeneration intoviolence

This book considers a variety of explanations of why politicaldisagreement is so extensive and persistent. The author examinesvariants of the 'contestability' and 'imperfection' conceptionswhich have dominated political theory: the idea that politicaldisagreement is so pervasive because of its value-ladenness; thatkey political concepts are essentially contested; that those whooccupy very different political positions fail to understand eachother. He argues that we need to develop a framework which borrowselements from both schools of thought, presupposing some form ofmoral cognitivism, while recognizing that many political disputescannot be resolved to the satisfaction of every reasonable person.Within such a framework he shows how empirical models can beconstructed which give an active role not only to the agent'sreasons for his or her beliefs, but also to other psychological andsociological considerations.
Kindred spirits despite their profound differences inposition, Abraham Lincoln and Walt Whitman shared a vision of thedemocratic character. They had read or listened to each other’swords at crucial turning points in their lives, and both wereutterly transformed by the tragedy of the Civil War. In thisradiant book, poet and biographer Daniel Mark Epstein tracks theparallel lives of these two titans from the day that Lincoln firstread Leaves of Grass to the elegy Whitman composed after Lincoln’sassassination in 1865. Epstein has written a masterful portrait oftwo great American figures and the era they shaped through wordsand deeds.
The world looks far different today than it did before theglobal financial crisis struck. Reeling from the most brutalimpacts of the recession, governments, economies, and societieseverywhere are retrenching and pushing hard for increasedprotectionism. That's understandable, but it's also dangerous, maintains global economy expert Pankaj Ghemawat in World 3.0. Leftunchecked, heightened protectionism could prevent peoples aroundthe world from achieving the true gains afforded by cross-borderopenness. Ghemawat paints a disturbing picture of what could happen--tohousehold income, availability of goods and services, and otherquality-of-life metrics--should globalization continue to reversedirection. He then describes how a wide range of players' privatebusinesses, policy makers, citizens, the press' could help openflows of ideas, people, and goods across borders, but in ways thatmaximize economic benefits for all. World 3.0 reveals how we're not nearly as globalized as we thinkwe are, and how pe
