The moral of this book is that behind every great engineeringsuccess is a trail of often ignored (but frequently spectacular)engineering failures. Petroski covers many of the best knownexamples of well-intentioned but ultimately failed design in action-- the galloping Tacoma Narrows Bridge (which you've probably seentossing cars willy-nilly in the famous black-and-white footage),the collapse of the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel walkways -- andmany lesser known but equally informative examples. The line ofreasoning Petroski develops in this book were later formalized intohis quasi-Darwinian model of technological evolution in TheEvolution of Useful Things , but this book is arguably the moreilluminating -- and defintely the more enjoyable -- of these twotitles. Highly recommended.
Seven of the most well-loved, frequently performed sacred cantatas: No. 1, "Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern"; No. 19, "Es erhub sich ein Streit"; No. 65, "Sie werden aus Saba Alle kommen"; 4 more. New literal line-for-line translations; printed from a clear, modern engraving and sturdily bound. Reliable Bach-Gesellschaft edition. Complete German texts.
Now in paperback, the fascinating, quirky, highly acclaimedbook about that indispensable object, the pencil. Petroski tracesits origins back to ancient Greece and Rome, writes factually andcharmingly about its development, and shows what the pencil canteach us about engineering and technology today.

Japanese woodblock prints of the Edo period (16151868) were the products of a highly commercialised and competitive publishing industry. Their content was inspired by the vibrant popular culture that flourished in Edo (Tokyo). At any given time scores of publishers competed for the services of the leading artists of the day. Publishers and artists displayed tremendous ingenuity in finding ways to sustain demand for prints and to to circumvent the restrictions placed upon them by government censorship. Japanese woodblock prints have long been appreciated in the West for their graphic qualities but their content has not always been fully understood. In recent years, publications by scholars in Japan, Europe and the United States have made possible a more subtle appreciation of the imagery encountered in them. This book draws upon this recent scholarship to explain how those who first purchased these prints would have read them. Through stunning new photography of both well-known and rarely published work

Although he composed in many musical genres, Vivaldi truly redefined the concerto and made it distinctly his own. And although adept at writing for a variety of instruments, the violin remained his primary instrument. The composer's 12 concertos known as "L'estro armonico" [Harmonic Innovation] are distinguished from all other ensemble music of their time by their empha-sis on virtuosity, their rhythmic exuberance, flexible instrumentation, indepen-dent approaches to thematic development, and their genuine innovations in concerto form. This magnificent work, dedicated to the Florentine Grand Prince Ferdinand Ⅲ de' Medici, incorporates twelve works organized as four sets. Each set contains a concerto for four solo violins, one for two solo violins, and one for a single solo violin. A distinguished addition to the music literature, this volume has been newly edited and engraved under the guidance of Dr. Eleanor Selfridge-Field, a recog-nized authority on music of the Italian Baroque, with associat

Paired together in a single, affordable volume, these disparate works reflect two different sides of Wagner's compositional mastery. Aside from his operatic works, Wagner wrote relatively little music--a single symphony, some overtures, and a few choral and piano works. Of these, the Siegfried Idyll is the most frequently performed. Although not part of the Ring cycle, the Idyll draws upon several of the Ring's motifs. Written for the birth- day of Wagner's wife, Cosima, it was never intended for public performance but financial difficulties forced the composer into publication. "The secret treasure is to become public property," Cosima noted in her diary, and audi-ences have been the happier for it. With Wagner's Faust Overture, the nineteenth century's preeminent German opera composer took on the most discussed and written-about work by Germany's most revered poet. Inspired by Wagner's attendance at a performance of Berlioz's Romeo and Juliet, the original composition dates from 1844 and depicts
