西部占我国陆地面积的三分之二，在这片广袤大地上，聚居着三亿多勤劳善良的各族人民，蕴藏着丰富的物产资源。对于西部，我有一份特殊的感情。我曾经在那里生活工作了16个年头，西部可以说是我的第二故乡。1962年我大学毕业后，分配到上海一家研究所工作。1965年，为响应备战备荒、建设“大三线”的号召，我所在的部门整体搬迁到西安。从大上海到西部古城，我领略了沟壑纵横的黄土高原、质朴厚重的民风社情、辉煌灿烂的古代文明，同时也感受到了西部民生多艰的一面。那时我常想，我们这代人能为西部做些什么？然而身处那个特殊的年代，虽有报效祖国之心，也只能是一种热切的期盼和美好的憧憬。

本书以西部农村青年的职业流动为研究主题，首先从人力资本形成的主要渠道 教育入手，分析教育机会分配和获得对西部农村青年人力资本水平的影响；其次，在西部农村青年人力资本分布的现实基础上，分析了人力资本水平对西部农村青年职业获得、职业选择、职位上升等方面的影响；再次，用代际职业流动的实际数据和案例，说明人力资本水平在经济社会快速发展背景下对西部农村青年职业流动的制约；*后提出扩大受教育机会、提高人力资本水平、增加农村青年的职业选择和流动能力的政策建议。
