At the turn of the century, when Alessandro Longo began editing his ll-volume collection of the keyboard sonatas of Domenieo Scarlatti, the legacy of the brilliant composer was still overshadowed by that of his contemporary, Johann Sebastian Bach. Today, Scarlatti (1685-1757) is recognized by most scholars and musicians as "the founder of modern keyboard execution" (Grove's Dictionary). His inventive style--most notable in these "essercizi" or sonatas--exercised a powerful influence over later masters such as Mendelssohn and Liszt. This sturdy volume presents 40 of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas in a handsome, affordable edition compiled directly from Longo's monumental ll-volume set. Written in the last fifteen years of his life while Scarlatti enjoyed the generous patronage of Queen Maria Barbara of Spain, the sonatas are the crowning achievements of an outstanding Baroque composer. Exciting experimental effects--consecutive fifths and octaves, crossing hands, internal repetitions, and extended chords

Of the man considered his artistic and spiritual successor, Schumann wrote: "'It seemed to me ……that……a musician would inevitably appear to whom it was vouchsafed to give the highest and most ideal expression to the tendencies of our time And he has come, a young man over whose cradle Graces and Heroes stood watch. His name is Johannes Brahms." By 1853 Brahms had emerged as a force in music, and would afterwards be aeknowledged as the greatest master of the symphonic form of the last half of the century. In that generation of composers, only Dvorak (for whom he had a special regard and to whom he gave invaluable aid) produced as much chamber music as the prolific Brahms. This prodigious outpouring, perhaps more than any other aspect of Brahms's oeuvre, provides a clear and uninterrupted view of his artistic development. Here reproduced in this handsome, inexpensive volume is a superb seleetion of chamber works masterful compositions by Brahms, written for violin, viola, cello and piano.
Stephen Foster's music "is part of every American's culture," wrote composer Virgil Thomson, and certainly this is true, for few American composers have created songs as lastingly popular as "Beautiful Dreamer," "Oh! Susanna," "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair," "Swanee River" (properly "Old Folks at Home"), "Camptown Races" and "My Old Kentucky Home, Good Night." The fact remains, however, that Foster's melodies have suffered continually at the hands of revisers and arrangers, so that often what we hear today is only a corrupt version of what Foster actually composed. This book corrects that situation by assembling forty songs as Foster originally wrote them. Many have been reproduced from original first-edition sheets, others from early editions, others from facsimiles of first editions. All are re-produced with their covers, to help capture the flavor of the period. Along with the old favorites listed above you will find "The Glendy Burk," "Ah May the Red Rose Live Alway! Massa's in de Cold Ground,
Few artists have created as much controversy or survived itwith greater fame than Edouard Manet. In his day, the avant-gardewas not only a challenge to the traditions of art, but it was alsoa gunshot fired at society as a whole. With his painting Olympia(1869), Manet was to become, to quote Degas, as famous asGaribaldi. Yet how the urbane and diffident son of a bourgeoisfamily became the father of both Realism and Impressionism is acomplex and fascinating story that has too often been reduced totextbook clichés. As Manet has become recognized as a touchstonefor historical change but also for interpretations of how thatchange came about, his individual story has become all the morerelevant to the study of art history. Moreover, far from being anartists to shrink behind his work, one of Manets mostcharacteristic practices was to leave an indelible trace of his ownpersonal identity within his paintings, as illustrated throughoutthe volume by eminent scholar James H. Rubin. This lavishlyillustrated volume
