Nikolai Roerich was born on October 9th, 1874 inSaint-Petersburg. After studying law and attending the Academy ofArt, Roerich developed a passionate interest in archaeology, hiscontribution to which was acknowledged when he became a lecturer atthe Russian Archaeological Society in 1900.
