Of the man considered his artistic and spiritual successor, Schumann wrote: "'It seemed to me ……that……a musician would inevitably appear to whom it was vouchsafed to give the highest and most ideal expression to the tendencies of our time And he has come, a young man over whose cradle Graces and Heroes stood watch. His name is Johannes Brahms." By 1853 Brahms had emerged as a force in music, and would afterwards be aeknowledged as the greatest master of the symphonic form of the last half of the century. In that generation of composers, only Dvorak (for whom he had a special regard and to whom he gave invaluable aid) produced as much chamber music as the prolific Brahms. This prodigious outpouring, perhaps more than any other aspect of Brahms's oeuvre, provides a clear and uninterrupted view of his artistic development. Here reproduced in this handsome, inexpensive volume is a superb seleetion of chamber works masterful compositions by Brahms, written for violin, viola, cello and piano.
Although he composed in many musical genres, Vivaldi truly redefined the concerto and made it distinctly his own. And although adept at writing for a variety of instruments, the violin remained his primary instrument. The composer's 12 concertos known as "L'estro armonico" [Harmonic Innovation] are distinguished from all other ensemble music of their time by their empha-sis on virtuosity, their rhythmic exuberance, flexible instrumentation, indepen-dent approaches to thematic development, and their genuine innovations in concerto form. This magnificent work, dedicated to the Florentine Grand Prince Ferdinand Ⅲ de' Medici, incorporates twelve works organized as four sets. Each set contains a concerto for four solo violins, one for two solo violins, and one for a single solo violin. A distinguished addition to the music literature, this volume has been newly edited and engraved under the guidance of Dr. Eleanor Selfridge-Field, a recog-nized authority on music of the Italian Baroque, with associat

The ubiquitous chair in all its shapes and forms (TASCHEN's 25th anniversary special edition) More than any other piece of furniture, the chair has been subjected to the wildest dreams of the designers. The particular curve of a back-rest, or the twist of a leg, the angle of a seat or the colour of the entire artefact all reflect the stylistic consciousness of each era. From Gerrit Rietveld and Alvar Aalto via Verner Panton to Eva Zeisel; from Art Nouveau to International Style, from Pop Art to Postmodernism, the phenomenon of the chair is so complex that it requires a reference work as comprehensive as this to do it full justice. They are all here: Thonet's bentwood chairs and Hoffmann's sitting-machines, Marcel Breuer's Wassily chair and Ron Arad's avant garde armchairs. The book, a slightly abbreviated version of our classic title 1000 Chairs, devotes one page to each chair, displayed on its own as pure form, with biographical and historical information about the chairs and their designers. A special treat

Hector Berlioz (1803-1869), considered the father of modern orchestration, possessed an intuitive musical genius all the more remarkable for his limited formal musieal education. A brilliant colorist, a master of the unexpected rhythmic break, he brought a new symphonie richness to Romantic tousle. Both danmed and venerated by his eontemporaries-Mendelssohn considered him devoid of talent, Paganini declared him the one true heir to the spirit of Beethoven-Berlioz seems to have sought in music a way to soothe and give voice to the turbulent psychological instabilities and contradictions which more than once brought him to despair. He pioneered in the development of what has eome to be ealled "program musie"-i.e., instrumental music with an extranmsieal signifieanee. He strove to communicate musically the experiences, psychological themes, scenic de*ions and literary allusions more commonly associated with the confessional writings of Romantic poets. Richard Wagner put his supreme effort, as well as his earnings, into constructing the perfect festival theater in the Bavarian town of Bayreuth where his masterpiece, the four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, could be performed in a manner which would conform to his vision of how the drama should unfold. Wagner's own perception was that the unique and revolutionary character of his monumental tetralogy neeessitated a speeial theater- one where the difficulties of staging an expansive drama could be surmounted, where changes of scene could be effected without halting the performance for vast lengths of time. Der Ring des Nibelungen, which is based on a medieval German epic, the Nibelungenlied, and Norse mythology, enlarged the expressive powers of German Romantic opera; today it also gives testimony to Wagner's willingness to venture into new areas for inspirational material. The third opera of the cycle, Siegfried, reproduced here in full score, presents the story of a youthful Germanic hero of

"Girl before a Mirror" (1932), one of severalstandouts in MoMA's vast collection of Pablo Picasso's work, takesthe traditional artistic theme of a woman before her mirror andreinvents it in radically modern terms. The girl's profile andblonde hair identify her as Marie-Thérèse Walter, the artist'slover, muse and a profoundly transformative presence in both hislife and art, but the painting is far from a conventional portrait. Its dazzling jewel-like colors, boldly contoured shapes and surfacepatterning transform the girl and her shadowy reflection into adeeply mysterious image that is both captivating and strange. Inher essay, MoMA's Blanchette Hooker Rockefeller Curator of Paintingand Sculpture, Anne Umland, explores this work in depth anddescribes the circumstances of its creation: the artist's privatelife, his practice as a sculptor, his rivalry with other artistsboth living and dead and his concern, at the age of 51, about hiscontemporary relevance and artistic legacy.

Japanese artist Yoshitaka Amano began his career with exceptional design work on fan-favorite anime such as Gatchaman/G-Force and Time Bokan and popular graphic novels Sandman: The Dream Hunters and Wolverine & Elektra: The Redeemer, but it wasn't until he turned his attention to the medium of printmaking that his artistic genius began to flower. Drawing from influences as diverse as Art Nouveau and Art Deco traditions, American comics, Japanese ukiyo-e, and traditional fantasy illustration, Amano's prints capture a breathtaking world -- sometimes whimsical, sometimes luxurious, and sometimes terrifying.
You'll be amazed by what's happened since "10x10_2". Green architecture has gone from novelty to necessity, walls have gone from necessary to optional, hula hoops have become a building material. Local is the new international. Architecture is the new art. The 100 architects featured in this volume, the latest in our successful "10x10" series, are pushing the boundaries of design and redefining the very meaning of architecture: a building sliced in half in order to design the space in between; a one-ton floating object of seeming weightlessness; a high-end shop in downtown Seoul covered entirely in vegetation; and, a skyscraper that seems to disappear on sunny days. This is architecture as you've never seen it before. "10x10_3" is a comprehensive and global view of new architecture, presenting the work of 100 up-and-coming architects from around the world, selected by 10 of the best-informed critics, curators, and architects. They include Joseph Grima (USA); Kengo Kuma (Japan); Peter Schmal (Germany); and Ai
Stephen Foster's music "is part of every American's culture," wrote composer Virgil Thomson, and certainly this is true, for few American composers have created songs as lastingly popular as "Beautiful Dreamer," "Oh! Susanna," "Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair," "Swanee River" (properly "Old Folks at Home"), "Camptown Races" and "My Old Kentucky Home, Good Night." The fact remains, however, that Foster's melodies have suffered continually at the hands of revisers and arrangers, so that often what we hear today is only a corrupt version of what Foster actually composed. This book corrects that situation by assembling forty songs as Foster originally wrote them. Many have been reproduced from original first-edition sheets, others from early editions, others from facsimiles of first editions. All are re-produced with their covers, to help capture the flavor of the period. Along with the old favorites listed above you will find "The Glendy Burk," "Ah May the Red Rose Live Alway! Paired together in a single, affordable volume, these disparate works reflect two different sides of Wagner's compositional mastery. Aside from his operatic works, Wagner wrote relatively little music--a single symphony, some overtures, and a few choral and piano works. Of these, the Siegfried Idyll is the most frequently performed. Although not part of the Ring cycle, the Idyll draws upon several of the Ring's motifs. Written for the birth- day of Wagner's wife, Cosima, it was never intended for public performance but financial difficulties forced the composer into publication. "The secret treasure is to become public property," Cosima noted in her diary, and audi-ences have been the happier for it. With Wagner's Faust Overture, the nineteenth century's preeminent German opera composer took on the most discussed and written-about work by Germany's most revered poet. Inspired by Wagner's attendance at a performance of Berlioz's Romeo and Juliet, the original composition dates from 1844 and depicts

Fumihiko Maki's many buildings are characterized by a commitment to the ongoing project of Modernism as well as a humanist concern for the experience of the people who inhabit them. Both a thoughtful writer and a prolific builder, Maki was a founding member of the Metabolists, a highly influential group of Japanese architects in the 1960s who redefined how designers thought about large-scale urban planning. His own work, while sometimes vast in scale, is consistently responsive to the individual user. His 50-year exploration and expansion of the Modernist vocabulary has resulted in buildings that are technologically inventive, deceptively simple, and which carefully balance lightness and dignity. This book contains over 40 projects, extensively illustrated with drawings, photos, models, sketches, diagrams and computer renderings. These include the Spiral Building in Tokyo, the Fujisawa Municipal Gymnasium, the Kaze-No-Oka Crematorium in Nakatsu, and a tower currently under construction for the World Trade Cen
