Richard Strauss (1864-1949) first wrote Ariadne auf Naxos as an interlude to be performed with Moli~re's play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, and it was presented in Stuttgart in that form in 1912. This glorious new Ariadne auf Naxos was first presented at the Vienna State Opera in October 1916.
