You'll be amazed by what's happened since "10x10_2". Green architecture has gone from novelty to necessity, walls have gone from necessary to optional, hula hoops have become a building material. Local is the new international. Architecture is the new art. The 100 architects featured in this volume, the latest in our successful "10x10" series, are pushing the boundaries of design and redefining the very meaning of architecture: a building sliced in half in order to design the space in between; a one-ton floating object of seeming weightlessness; a high-end shop in downtown Seoul covered entirely in vegetation; and, a skyscraper that seems to disappear on sunny days. This is architecture as you've never seen it before. "10x10_3" is a comprehensive and global view of new architecture, presenting the work of 100 up-and-coming architects from around the world, selected by 10 of the best-informed critics, curators, and architects. They include Joseph Grima (USA); Kengo Kuma (Japan); Peter Schmal (Germany); and Ai

Paired together in a single, affordable volume, these disparate works reflect two different sides of Wagner's compositional mastery. Aside from his operatic works, Wagner wrote relatively little music--a single symphony, some overtures, and a few choral and piano works. Of these, the Siegfried Idyll is the most frequently performed. Although not part of the Ring cycle, the Idyll draws upon several of the Ring's motifs. Written for the birth- day of Wagner's wife, Cosima, it was never intended for public performance but financial difficulties forced the composer into publication. "The secret treasure is to become public property," Cosima noted in her diary, and audi-ences have been the happier for it. With Wagner's Faust Overture, the nineteenth century's preeminent German opera composer took on the most discussed and written-about work by Germany's most revered poet. Inspired by Wagner's attendance at a performance of Berlioz's Romeo and Juliet, the original composition dates from 1844 and depicts

The Artists Laboratory series presents the more experimental and less familiar work of contemporary artists, opening up the creative process to explore the conceptual, visual and practical issues with which they engage. For the painter Hughie ODonoghue RA (b. 1953), this process involves research into his familys past in particular his fathers experiences in the Second World War an ongoing project that he likens to a draughtsmans exploration of subject-matter. Seeking in his art to remember events that he did not witness himself, to put flesh on the bones of history, ODonoghue unites this immersive investigation in personal and public archives with his preoccupation with art history, artefacts and mythology, creating poetic and moving works of universal significance. In this book, the fifth in the Artists Laboratory series, ODonoghue and his fellow Royal Academician Grayson Perry discuss ideas of remembrance and the subjective re-telling of history, while ODonoghue himself reflects on the personal and
There is no doubt about Gustav Klimt's greatness as a draftsman.Remarkable above all is the intensely sensual mood that heestablishes in his limpid, fluid drawings and watercolors: thepencil or crayon line with which his subjects are describedexplores and caresses as though the act of drawing was itself aseduction. Klimt's drawings are often highly erotic and explicit, many to such an extent that they have rarely been reproduced. Thishas made for an unbalanced representation of his work as adraftsman, and a comprehensive survey of his graphic output is longoverdue. Rainer Metzger, a notedart historian, has brought together hundreds of Klimt's drawingsand watercolors in a way that enriches our knowledge of the artistand enhances the visual impact of his oeuvre. Klimt's drawings andstudies, and his elegantly direct and dangerously intoxicatingpreparatory sketches, reveal the underlying impetus for andstructure of his elaborate canvases. 307 color illustrations.
Few artists have created as much controversy or survived itwith greater fame than Edouard Manet. In his day, the avant-gardewas not only a challenge to the traditions of art, but it was alsoa gunshot fired at society as a whole. With his painting Olympia(1869), Manet was to become, to quote Degas, as famous asGaribaldi. Yet how the urbane and diffident son of a bourgeoisfamily became the father of both Realism and Impressionism is acomplex and fascinating story that has too often been reduced totextbook clichés. As Manet has become recognized as a touchstonefor historical change but also for interpretations of how thatchange came about, his individual story has become all the morerelevant to the study of art history. Moreover, far from being anartists to shrink behind his work, one of Manets mostcharacteristic practices was to leave an indelible trace of his ownpersonal identity within his paintings, as illustrated throughoutthe volume by eminent scholar James H. Rubin. This lavishlyillustrated volume

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) first wrote Ariadne auf Naxos as an interlude to be performed with Moli~re's play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, and it was presented in Stuttgart in that form in 1912. Several years later, with his collaborator Hugo von Hoffmansthal, Strauss expanded the work into the full-length opera we know today. This glorious new Ariadne auf Naxos was first presented at the Vienna State Opera in October 1916. The story artfully intermingles backstage comedy, the lofty emotions of Greek mythology and the merry pranks of a troupe of commedia dell'arte players. Strauss endowed these antic proceedings with a luminous score that combines music of great satiric wit with breathtaking flights of lyricism. Today Ariadne auf Naxos is one of Richard Strauss's most highly regarded operas, and is frequently performed on the world's stages. It is reprinted here from the definitive full-score edition published in Berlin by Adolph Fiirstner following the opera's 1916 premiere.

Japanese artist Yoshitaka Amano began his career with exceptional design work on fan-favorite anime such as Gatchaman/G-Force and Time Bokan and popular graphic novels Sandman: The Dream Hunters and Wolverine & Elektra: The Redeemer, but it wasn't until he turned his attention to the medium of printmaking that his artistic genius began to flower. This book rewrites the history of jewellery in the age ofVictoria. The age of Victoria is taken in its widest sense toencompass jewellery made throughout Europe and America, displayedat the great international exhibitions and distributed throughforeign trade, illustrated publications and a burgeoning touristindustry. Throughout, links with other disciplines will provideboth the specialist and the non-specialist with the information tounderstand how jewellery permeated all walks and conditions of lifein the 19th century. The focus of the book is on the attitudes ofowners to their jewellery and the symbolic weight that it wasexpected to carry. Rather than concentrating on the major figuresat the top end of the jewellery trade, or indeed offering achronological survey of the development of jewellery styles andfashions, it is oriented towards the social aspects of owning, wearing and displaying jewellery. The authors show, for example, how novelists use jewellery to add a moral or metaphoricaldimension to a
The Spanish artist Antonio Lopez Garcia is revered worldwidenot only for the extreme realism he brings to his paintings anddrawings, but because he conveys through this extreme realism awonderful sensitivity to light, color and space, enabling each tobreathe with a tranquility that allows for the encroachments ofeveryday life. Interior scenes of dining tables, bathroom sinks, toilets, dressers are depicted in sober light that recall Chardinor the intimisme of Vuillard--though Lopez Garcia surpasses eventhese masters in his ability to make unforgivingly prosaic subjectmatter, such as a brick wall or a refrigerator, sparkle and throbwith mood. The artist's statement that "you work until the wholesurface has an expressive intensity equivalent to what you havebefore you, converted into a pictorial reality" conveys somethingof the labor he brings to his works: Lopez Garcia is not a prolificartist, and as a result shows rarely (his 2008 exhibition at theMuseum of Fine Arts, Boston, consolidated his already st
